Professor Muntzer Mughal is a consultant surgeon who is the Head of Upper Gastrointestinal Services at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is also Honorary Clinical Professor in Surgery
His major specialities include benign and malignant upper gastrointestinal surgery as well as thyroid surgery. Professor Mughal is skilled in laparoscopic, keyhole surgery for more minor problems such as hernias and gallbladders. He is also renowned for his skills in open surgery for more complex problems.
Professor Mughal is the joint oesophago-gastric Pathways Director for London Cancer.
Professor Mughal qualified from Manchester Medical School with a MB ChB in 1977. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1981 and was awarded a ChM by the University of Manchester in 1985. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in University Department of Surgery at Hope Hospital in Salford in 1989. In 1991 he moved to Preston and Chorley as a Consultant Surgeon and developed the department of Upper GI Surgery which gained a reputation for teaching, training and excellent outcomes for surgery. He was very involved in implementing the governments Improving Outcomes Guidance in oesophagogastric surgery that led to Preston being designated as the oesophago-gastric cancer centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria network in 2009.
In 2011 he was invited to come to UCLH to lead Upper GI Services there.
Professor Mughal is very active in teaching and works in many national organisations to improve the quality of surgery around the UK.
